Worth a Second Look

BeSpoke Vision

Think your child has ADD? It could just be blurred vision.

With the million and five things we have grabbing for our attention on a daily basis, it’s no wonder we can miss important details. We’ve all heard the saying “things aren’t always what they seem” and this applies to our health as well.

One in four of children have some form of learning impairment. Many times, these are considered behavioral in nature and a trip to a general practitioner is scheduled.

This can lead to a prevalent, and often times improper diagnosis of ADD. Of course, any and all avenues should be explored while working towards a solution in your child’s health, but what might go over-looked, however, is a trip to your eye doctor.

Parents might be surprised to learn, 80% of learning problems are vision related.

Poor vision can be more than frustrating

Imagine how frustrating it would be trying to learn new things if you can’t see clearly.

Often times, children don’t know how to express this as a problem. Instead of specifically stating what or how they are seeing, they tend to act out in ways which are common indicators of ADD.

These behaviors can include impulsivity, hyperactivity and distractibility.

Their inability to focus in school may be as simple as that. A blurry world is hard to pay perfect attention to.

Convergence Insufficiency is gaining public attention as one of the more common issues which can cause an ADD misdiagnosis.

CI is sneakier than your normal near-sighted/farsighted diagnosis as you can still have 20/20 vision and this condition.

This eye condition causes people to have difficulty coordinating both eyes at near distances.

Because of this, they can’t change their focus quickly enough.

This often impacts reading, making it to where one will avoid it all together.

When CI is caught and properly diagnosed, it can be corrected with supervised vision exercises in a clinical office.

Get a second opinion

It is always considered wise to reach out for a second opinion in major health changes. Behavior and learning disability diagnoses should be no different.

While a yearly eye exam should be an important part of everyone’s health plan, it is especially important for the little ones.

Giving them a head start on eye health can lessen learning insufficiencies down the road.
