Preventing Cataracts IS Within Your Control

You might think Clouds in your Coffee is relaxing, but clouds in your vision is anything but. Cataracts is one of the most prevalent sight loss issues in America, causing a clouding of the eye’s natural lens.

There are three types of cataracts:

  • Subcapsular: occurring in the back of the lens, diabetics and people taking high doses of steroids are most at risk.

  • Nuclear: forms in the center of the lens and is associated with more birthdays aka aging.

  • Cortical: white and wedge-like, they start in the periphery and work their way inward, think bicycle spokes.

At first, cataracts may not be that noticeable. It could cause your vision to blur a little, or skew headlights at night causing their points of light to become more feathered. In fact, there is a phenomenon where vision is actually improved, called “second sight”, but that is short lived.

Advancing age definitely plays a large role in cataracts, butother issues such as hypertension, obesity, smoking, UV radiation and family history have a bearing on your risk as well.

There are steps you can take to prevent cataracts from becoming a problem, however:

  • Make sure you get Vitamins A, C and E, lutein and zeaxanthin. Lettuce 🙂 eat lots of dark green, leafy veggies!
  • Take or look for foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. I trout 🐟 you’ll have any issues getting enough if you eat fish!
  • Wear sunglasses with appropriate UV protection. Between U and V, 😎 sunglasses are the simplest way to protect your peepers!
  • Quit smoking! No pun here, just stop.

If you know you fall within the risk areas, make sure you are guarding yourself from problems down the line. Sub a nutrient rich salad for fries, get exercise, and keep your eyes shielded from the sun. If your diet doesn’t have room for five to nine servings of fruits and veggies, or if you’re not really a fish person, find supplements that will fill in the gaps. The best treatment is prevention! Don’t let your future be cloudy, have a clear plan to stop cataracts in its cata-tracts!
