The key to avoiding eye injury while playing sports

Many parents have kids who participate in some form of sports. When getting your kiddos ready for the field, court, or pool, one of the top priorities for parents is providing their children with the proper safety gear. This can range anywhere from padding to wrist guards, but always must include safe eyewear!

Did you know that 90% of eye injuries would be avoidable if the child was wearing the appropriate eyewear? More than 42,000 sports related injuries are reported each year in the US. That doesn’t account for the incidents that never make their way to a doctor where they can be reported. Of these injuries, more than 70% are from people under the age of 25.

What injuries are occurring?

The occasional black eye isn’t all that you need to guard from. Corneal abrasions are the most reported, followed by conjunctivitis and a foreign body in the eye.

What sports cause the most injuries?

Basketball is the top culprit here; followed closely by watersports, non-powder guns (such as BB and paintball guns), baseball/softball and football.

What kind of protection do you need?

That’s a good question. Before even signing up for the sport you should have your child’s eyes checked to determine if they need any corrective lenses. Maximizing depth perception is paramount to sports performance!

Everyday glasses do not provide enough coverage. Each sport requires something different, so check with the coach to see what he recommends for the sport, and then head in to see how we can customize their eyewear for their activity.

When looking for a sturdy pair of sports goggles, you’ll want to look for something made out of Polycarbonate, as it is lightweight and resistant to impact. This is especially important for sports with fast moving balls or pucks.

If your kiddo is swimming, make sure they do not wear their contacts in the pool! Look into getting their prescription into watertight goggles. This avoids possible sight threatening bacterial infections.

Not all sports require being in the water, or around fast-moving objects. Track, cycling, and golf can all be safely played with sports sunglasses that provide ample UV protection and glare control. Like sunscreen, sunglasses will help protect the eye from cancer, and will also protect from age related macular degeneration, and cataracts later in life.
